Choosing keywords

Keywords are vital to search marketing success. Almost all of search marketing, revolves around words, particularly keywords. Selecting general and specific keywords that are relevant to the specific products, services, or content of each page of the web site is an essential component of SEO. When optimazing your web site, you should place one or two target keywords in the title tag of your web page, as well as in the description and keyword meta tag. Your selected keywords should be the starting point used to generate the content for each web page. When you are building backlinks to your pages, keep the target keywords for each page in mind.

  1. Choose 6-10 keyword phrases people would search for to find a site like yours.
    • Phrases produce more specific results than single words
    • Create longer phrases (4+ words) that combine smaller phrases
    • Ask friends/colleagues which phrases they would use to find a site like yours
    • Don't include commonplace words in your meta tags (a, at, the etc)
    • Look at the meta tag keywords your competition use
  2. Look up these phrases on wordtracker (click on "Free Trial" for a quick look up or purchase the full product)
  3. Check alternate spellings of the same words and alternate words (some might be more popular than others)
  4. Visit keyword density analyzer - fast free analysis of any web page

Keywords for search engines

  • Use keyword phrases wisely, make a particular phrase prominent for each page
  • Include keyword phrases in ‹title› tag, ‹h1› - ‹h6› tags, text links, content, ‹alt› tag in images.
  • Keep the keyword phrase intact - don't split it up into individual keywords
  • Keywords should not be repeated more than 4-6 times per 350 words of content
  • Make sure it is used in the same way in the title, headings, links, content and alt tags

Search Algorithms apply more weight to the title of your web page than the density of the keywords on it. Your most important target keywords should be contained in your title and should also be spread throughout the content of your web page.
